Sherman Oaks Hospital among top 5% in nation for patient safety

Sherman Oaks, CA – March 12, 2024 – Sherman Oaks Hospital, a member of Prime Healthcare Foundation, announced today that it has been recognized as a 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ recipient by Healthgrades, the leading resource consumers use to find a hospital or doctor. This achievement, along with Sherman Oaks Hospital’s accomplishments as an IBM Watson Health™ (formerly Truven Health Analytics) is one of 100 Top Hospitals™ in the Nation. Nationally recognized by the American Heart Association for improving stroke treatment. Received The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval and the American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark for Advanced Primary Stroke certification. The hospital has recently earned a Bronze Seal Accreditation as a Geriatric Emergency Department from the American College of Emergency Physicians reflects Sherman Oaks Hospital’s commitment to delivering safe, high-quality care.

“Sherman Oaks Hospital has cultivated an outstanding safety culture that prioritizes the well-being of both patients and staff, setting a high standard for patient safety nationwide,” said Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer and head of data science at Healthgrades. “We’re proud to recognize Sherman Oaks Hospital for providing top-quality care while preventing serious injuries to patients during their hospital stay.”

Other clinical recognition Sherman Oaks Hospital has earned recently include Five-Star ratings in Cardiac, Orthopedics, Pulmonary, and Critical Care recognitions by Healthgrades for Specialty Care and earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group for Patient Safety.

“We are extremely proud that once again, Sherman Oaks Hospital has been awarded by Healthgrades as one the Top 5% in the Nation for Patient Safety. Together, we consistently and actively demonstrate excellence in hospital safety throughout the years. This indicates how well our hospital safely protects our patients from preventable errors, injuries, and infections in achieving and maintaining this recognition,” said EM V. Garcia, Chief Executive Officer at Sherman Oaks Hospital. “This can also be attributed in part to our team’s ability to recognize and meet the changing needs of our community through our specialty services and programs like our Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, which involves a multidisciplinary team of clinicians utilizing the latest proven protocols for rapid response to heart attacks. Our Cardiac Laboratory features a multi-use combo laboratory with full cardiac diagnostic and interventional capabilities for life-saving cardiac and vascular procedures. The Center for Reconstruction and Wound Healing specializes in comprehensive wound care & hyperbaric medicine. That develops a personalized care plan using the most advanced healing techniques that gets you back to a healthy life as quickly as possible — with care, concern, and compassion,” Garcia added. “Patient safety is more than just a phrase, it is a commitment, as it authenticates the commitment and performance of our team in providing the best care possible. This Patient Safety Excellence Award validates our hospital’s vision, mission, and exceptional collaboration displayed in delivering each day on our commitment to quality, outcomes, clinical excellence, and patient safety.”

Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates for approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide to determine this year’s top-performing hospitals for patient safety. During the 2020-2022 study period, nearly 170,000 potentially preventable safety events occurred among Medicare patients in U.S. hospitals, with four patient safety indicators accounting for close to 75% of these incidents.* Healthgrades’ analysis revealed that patients treated in hospitals receiving the 2024 Patient Safety Excellence Award have a significantly lower chance of experiencing one of the four leading safety indicators than patients treated at non-recipient hospitals:

  • In-hospital fall resulting in fracture (approximately 52% less likely)
  • Collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest (approximately 56% less likely)
  • Pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital (approximately 67% less likely)
  • Catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital (approximately 71% less likely)
