Dr. Som grew up in Westlake Village, then attended UCLA, where he graduated with honors with a degree in Cybernetics while specializing in Physiologic Science and a minor in Mathematics.
- [Traumatic Wounds](https://shermanoakshospital.org/services/center-for-reconstruction-wound-healing-with-hyp/traumatic-wounds/): Traumatic wounds are typically defined as cuts, lacerations or puncture wounds which have caused damage to both the skin and underlying tissues. Acute wounds, cut wounds and penetrating wounds are the three categories that make up traumatic wounds. An acute wound occurs when the skin has been ripped or torn and has a jagged appearance. An acute wound typically contains foreign bodies such as gravel, glass, metal or sand. With acute traumatic wounds, it is not uncommon for layers of tissue to be easily visible along the inside of the cut. A traumatic cut wound is the result of something sharp penetrating the skin and the underlying subcutaneous tissues. Penetrating wounds, however, are considered the deepest and most severe of all traumatic wounds, because they often occur as the result of being stabbed or sustaining a gunshot wound. 
- [Infections](https://shermanoakshospital.org/services/center-for-reconstruction-wound-healing-with-hyp/infections/): This includes types of bacterial skin infection which, while predominantly affecting the skin. It may also expand to include the subcutaneous tissue, muscle and fat. The medical term "necrosis" actually refers to the death of the body's cells or tissues. Essentially, necrotizing fasciitis results in the destruction of the cellular makeup of the skin and subcutaneous tissue. For this reason, necrotizing fasciitis is often referred to as a flesh-eating bacterial infection, because the bacterium literally eats through the layers of skin.
- [Soft Tissue Radionecrosis](https://shermanoakshospital.org/services/center-for-reconstruction-wound-healing-with-hyp/soft-tissue-radionecrosis/): Soft tissue radionecrosis (STRN) refers to the death (necrosi) of soft tissues as a result of exposure to ionizing radiation. It is a counterpart of osteoradionecrosis, which is the death of bone tissue due to radiation.
- [Pressure Ulcers](https://shermanoakshospital.org/services/center-for-reconstruction-wound-healing-with-hyp/pressure-ulcers/): Pressure ulcers, also called bedsores, are injuries to skin and underlying tissues that result from prolonged pressure on the skin. Bedsores most often develop on skin that covers bony areas of the body, such as the heel, ankles, hips or buttocks.
- [Osteomyelitis](https://shermanoakshospital.org/services/center-for-reconstruction-wound-healing-with-hyp/osteomyelitis/): Osteomyelitis is a bone infection caused by bacteria or, in rare cases, a fungus. Your bones are a living tissue and, like other tissues in your body, can become infected by microbes.
- [Debridement](https://shermanoakshospital.org/services/center-for-reconstruction-wound-healing-with-hyp/debridement/): Debridement is the process of removing dead skin and tissue. Your doctor or nurse will need to do this to see your foot ulcer. There are many ways to do this. One way is to use a scalpel and special scissors.
- [Infection Management](https://shermanoakshospital.org/services/center-for-reconstruction-wound-healing-with-hyp/infection-management/): The management of wounds may involve many different interventions and strategies. These include the use of pressure redistributing surfaces, repositioning, nutrition, pain control, continence care, and skin and wound care. Despite growing concerns about antibiotic-resistant bacteria, the appropriate use of systemic antibiotics is still recommended when there is clear evidence of infection.
- [Bio-Engineered Tissue](https://shermanoakshospital.org/services/center-for-reconstruction-wound-healing-with-hyp/bio-engineered-tissue/): Over the past two decades, the field of wound healing and tissue repair has witnessed tremendous advances resulting from the biological sciences, biomedical and tissue engineering, and greater clinical understanding of wounds and their pathophysiology. In large part because of these advances, clinicians are now able to offer and deliver more sophisticated and effective treatments to patients with acute wounds, chronic wounds, burns, and other types of injuries.

Compression therapy serves several purposes in the treatment of venous insufficiency:

However, the use of gauze may be painful and is time-intensive to put in place. There are new advanced dressing materials that prevent the formation of bacteria and promote the healing processes necessary inside the wound.
- [Off Loading](https://shermanoakshospital.org/services/center-for-reconstruction-wound-healing-with-hyp/off-loading/): Off-loading means no weight-bearing on an extremity. If you are told that you should "off-load," it means that you are not able to walk or bear weight on the extremity that has a wound, or the extremity where a wound appears likely to develop. This includes on your bottom or hips if you are bed or chair-bound.
- [Negative Pressure](https://shermanoakshospital.org/services/center-for-reconstruction-wound-healing-with-hyp/negative-pressure/): Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is used to treat acute and chronic wounds. A vacuum source creates continuous or intermittent negative pressure inside the wound to remove fluid, exudates, and infectious materials to prepare the wound for healing and closure. The negative pressure system consists of a vacuum pump, drainage tubing, a foam or gauze wound dressing, and an adhesive film dressing that covers and seals the wound.
